On July 14, 2025, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar formally resigned from the Adamawa State branch of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Ahead of Nigeria's 2027 elections, he announced his support for a new coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing irreconcilable divisions and a loss of party goals as justifications.
Atiku cites party drift and leaves the PDP.
Atiku formally announced his departure in a letter to his ward chairman in Jada, Adamawa. He claimed it was hard for him to stay since the PDP had "derailed from its core principles."
New Partnership: ADC Coalition Gains Strength
Atiku has joined the newly established alliance under the leadership of ADC, including opposition leaders, including Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amachi and Peter Obi. Rauf Darbesola and former Senate President David Mark, who served as temporary leaders, intended to meet the APC, the cancelable APC in Block 2027.
Bolaji Abdullahi from ADC praised and said:
PDP reacts, reduces the effect
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde responded to the news that Atiku's departure did not threaten:
Party leader Bode George said:
APC Raises Legal Concerns and Mocks Exit
The APC reacted angrily. Atiku was referred to as a "political drifter" by Felix Morka, while spokesperson Bala Ibrahim stated:
Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation, accused Atiku in his letter of being disrespectful by announcing his departure during a period of national sorrow and of abusing the Nigerian flag.
Atiku's actions have resulted in enormous changes in the political scenario in Nigeria. Their reaction activates the ADC alliance by reducing the PDP opportunities for the 2027 election. An intergrade opposition front can significantly change the political scenario, remarkable if Peter OBI and other impressive characters officially support Atiku.
How are you with Atiku's moving? Is it just political risk or the beginning of more formidable protest?
