Controversy in Yoruba Land: Alaafin Demands Ooni to Withdraw Dotun Sanusi’s Chieftaincy

Abimbola Owoade, Alaafin of Oyo

Abimbola Owoade, the Alaafin of Oyo, has challenged the authority of Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, to grant businessman Dotun Sanusi the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland.

In a statement issued by Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin’s Director of Publicity and Media, on Monday, the monarch described the Ooni’s move as a direct challenge. He said it was an affront to his exclusive right to give titles that embrace the entire Yorubaland.

According to the report, Owoade claimed that the Ooni’s authority was limited to Oranmiyan Local Government Area, which has since been divided into Ife Central, Ife North, and Ife South.

The Alaafin demanded that the title granted to Sanusi be revoked within 48 hours, warning that there would be consequences if his order was not followed.

Recalling his recent tour of the Yoruba land, Owoade stated that peace and unity were still crucial for sustainable development in the region.

The statement added, “The continued presence of the king who is disturbing the Yoruba land by the Ooni of Ife is not an affront. The respected office of the Alaafin, who is the Titan of the Yoruba land, has the right to grant anyone The Chieftaincy over all of Yoruba land.”

The Ooni of Ife acts like there is no one in charge to check him and call him to order. Because of this attitude, which some describe as being "above the law," he walks all over everyone. This includes the Supreme Court, which ruled on what it described as the exclusive power of the Alaafin to grant a title that covers the entire Yoruba land to anyone.

The statement also asserted, “Oba Ogunwusi was immediately directed, after his coronation, to restrict his traditional jurisdiction to Oranmiyan local government, which has now been divided into Ife Central, Ife North, and Ife South.”

The principle that no one is above the law of the land is now being put to the test. The events of our time make it imperative, as stated: “The Alaafin must summon the Ooni of Ife and order the revocation of the title of Okanlomo conferred on Sanusi by the Yoruba king within 48 hours or face consequences.”

Question: Why does Alaafin want the title revoked?
