Fatal Event in Lagos: 8 Confirmed Dead, More Injured

A 16-seater Mazda bus with license plate KJA 811 YF and a DAF truck with registration T1 4636 LA collided in the Lagos collision, which happened at Atura Bus Stop.  According to witnesses, the bus driver was speeding when he lost control and collided with the truck, killing several people.

Rescue activities were conducted at the scene by Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials working with the FRSC, police, and 244 Battalion soldiers.

After reportedly being rescued from the wreckage, eight survivors were taken to Badagry General Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment for serious injuries.

LASTMA reports that the collision is still being investigated.  Early reports, however, confirmed that high speed was the primary cause.

Attending the scene, LASTMA's general manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, called the event "heart-wrenching and a painful reminder of the dangers of speeding."

His words, "No journey should end in such tragedy,"  If the motorist had complied with speed regulations, this tragic loss of life could have been prevented.  One of the biggest killers on our roads is speed.  To save lives, we urge drivers to reduce their speed and abide by traffic laws.  To prevent unnecessary deaths, we encourage all drivers to drive with care.

He underlined the vital role that drivers must play while restating the agency's dedication to road safety.

Bakare-Oki also pledged that LASTMA was increasing its efforts to stop reckless driving by putting speed limiters in high-accident areas and enforcing the law more rigorously.

Residents of the Badagry neighbourhood expressed their sorrow over the occurrence and demanded harsher punishments for careless drivers.

"This is getting too common," remarked a resident who only went by Igbekeleoluwa Ranti.  More needs to be done by the government to prevent these preventable fatalities.  We are grieving yet another terrible loss.  It remains unclear when drivers will realise that speed kills.
