Peter Rufai Passes Away at 61: Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu, NFF Pay Tribute to Super Eagles Legend

Following the passing of former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, who died at the age of 61, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his deepest sympathies.

The President lamented the passing of the cherished goalie, affectionately known as "Dodomayana" by supporters throughout Nigeria, in an official statement issued on Thursday through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.  Tinubu stated that Rufai was a patriotic athlete who deserved his place in Nigerian sports history and extended his condolences to his family, friends, and the broader football community.

"I can still clearly recall the pivotal role Peter Rufai played as the Super Eagles' first-choice goalkeeper during Nigeria's successful 1994 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Tunisia," Tinubu remarked.  "He played a significant role in Nigeria's 1994 FIFA World Cup debut in the United States and made a second appearance in France in 1998."

Rufai was one of the first Nigerian players to play football in Europe, having started his career with Stationery Stores of Lagos in 1980.  He played professionally for clubs in Belgium, Portugal, Spain, and the Netherlands, thereby boosting Nigeria's stature in international football and opening doors for future players.

Even after retiring, Rufai, a royal prince from Idimu, Lagos, remained dedicated to youth development.  To maintain his reputation as a player and educator, he established the Staruf Football Academy, where he coached aspiring football players.

President Tinubu prayed for Rufai's soul to rest in peace and for those who are grieving to find solace.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu joined the nation in grief, calling Rufai's death a "great loss to Nigerian football." Sanwo-Olu referred to Rufai as a legend who proudly served Nigeria, especially during his time with the Super Eagles and Stationery Stores, in a statement released by his media assistant, Gboyega Akosile.

"The loss of Dodomayana is devastating—not only for Lagos State, but for the country as a whole," said Sanwo-Olu. "His contributions to football will never be forgotten, and he was a true ambassador for Nigeria."

Shock was also expressed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).  Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, the general secretary, expressed his profound sadness over the shocking information.  We were unaware that he was even sick.  This is a terrible blow.  May God grant him eternal peace and solace to everyone who mourns for him.

Rufai's remains have been transported to a hospital in Lagos, according to former midfielder Waidi Akanni, who confirmed his passing to THISDAY.  Rufai was a gentleman who actively supported the local league even after retiring, according to NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye.  Elegbeleye continued, "He was always willing to help out at our events and inspired a lot of young players."

It's hard to believe I'm writing this," said Ahmed Musa, the current captain of the Super Eagles, in a tribute posted on his X (previously Twitter) account.  Peter Rufai, rest in peace.  On the international scene, your presence in goal made us proud.  Even though you are no longer with us, future Super Eagles will always be motivated by your legacy.

In December 1981, Peter Rufai made his debut for the national team.  Before Nigeria won the championship in 1994, he had a key role in the nation's silver medal finishes in the AFCON competitions in 1984 and 1988.  Additionally, he helped Nigeria go to the Round of 16 in the World Cup finals in 1994 and 1998.

Rufai was an exceptional player with Stationery Stores after leaving the Super Eagles, and he helped the team go to the 1981 Africa Cup Winners' Cup final.

His reputation forever marks Nigerian football history as a national hero, a world-class goalkeeper, and a mentor.
